Global Multispectral Auroral Imaging of an Isolated Substorm

چکیده
Abstract. We analyze simultaneous visible, ultraviolet (UV), and X-ray auroral images of an isolated substorm on January 25, 1998. The total precipitating electron energy flux and mean energy extracted near substorm maximum from each of the imagers are in acceptable agreement. The expansion phase visible, UV, and Xray emissions are morphologically similar, with the brightest emissions coming from the auroral surge. However, during the recovery phase, there are regions of bright X-ray emissions near local midnight and dawn that do not correspond to obvious features in the visible and UV images. X-ray energy analysis in these regions reveals a high energy (∼30–100 keV) component of the precipitating electron population that contributes ∼30% of the total electron energy flux. The temporal development of the X rays indicates that the dawn emissions originate in a drifting electron population, while the newly revealed midnight emissions originate in a continuous injection of energetic electrons in a narrow local time region.

Are repetitive particle injections during high-speed solar wind streams classic substorms?
[1] The relation between substorm occurrences, energetic particle injections, and HighIntensity Long-Duration Continuous AE Activity (HILDCAA) events has been an issue. To understand their relationship, we use global auroral images from the Wideband Imaging Camera (WIC) on the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) spacecraft to investigate auroral activity near the times ...
متن کاملObservations of GPS scintillation during an isolated auroral substorm
This paper reports simultaneous observations of ionospheric scintillation during an auroral substorm that were made using an all-sky full-color digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera (ASC) and a Global Positioning System (GPS) ionospheric scintillation and total electron content monitor (GISTM) in Tromsø (69.60 N, 19.20 E), Norway. On the night of November 19, 2009, a small substorm occurred ...

[1] Global auroral images are used to investigate how specific types of solar wind change relate to the resulting type of auroral-region disturbance, with the goal of determining fundamental response types. For not strongly southward IMF conditions (Bz ^ 5 nT), we find that IMF changes that are expected to reduce the convection electric field after^30 min of negative IMF Bz cause typical substo...
متن کاملSimulation of the March 9, 1995, substorm: Auroral brightening and the onset of lobe reconnection
A global MHD simulation of an isolated substorm that occurred on March 9, 1995 is presented. The simulation, driven with solar wind data provided by the Wind satellite, reproduced to a surprising degree the evolution of substorm activity. The onset of the expansion phase was coincident with the penetration of an electric field spike into the nearEarth region. This impulse launched a tailward pr...
متن کاملInvestigation of external triggering of substorms with Polar ultraviolet imager observations
[1] The triggering mechanism(s) for the substorm expansion phase onset is one of the outstanding issues in magnetospheric physics. Previous studies have shown that an impingement of the high solar wind dynamic pressure may lead to the expansion phase onset of a substorm. These previous studies typically used a negative magnetic bay as the main proxy for a substorm, but we now know that some mag...
